I'm Genjo Sanzo. So you went to the trouble of buying the [Saiyuki Reload] OVA. I was told to say something for the special CD, so here I am talking, but I don't really have anything special to say. Hmm? What's this? You're saying I'm supposed to answer these? What a pain in the ass. What's the first one?

2) What do you think about Gojyo?
Don't need him. Next!

3) What do you think about Hakkai?
Well, he can just do whatever he wants. Though really, they all just do what they want, anyway. Me, too, you say? What's the problem with that? Next!

4) What do you think about the Sanzo party?
I just told you! [sigh] I guess the next one's the last question.

5) A message for your fans?
I won't tell you to watch us or listen to us or whatever. We're here because we live how we want. You guys live how you want, too. That's all.

Empathy - the eyes of the heart

Sanzo is canonically an Empath, but an untrained and unaware one. This means he reads emotions and intent. He'll pick up on things below the surface without even realizing it, and he indulges in vice -- particularly smoking -- as a way to try to drown it out.

Being that he doesn't know what he's trying to drown out, it's about as effective as you might imagine. Smoking and drinking does nothing to shush the Empathic readings, but makes it easier for him to cope with them which... from his utterly untrained perspective, is about the same thing.

This isn't mind-reading, just emotions. As a small consolation prize, it does make him pretty good at poker.
